home-of-d's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Solstice Its christmas time. I use to be one of those people that thought it was a sad state of affairs that the Christ element was being lost in christmas. And then I opened my eyes. Well it goes back to much more pagan roots. To the times of solstice and yuletide. When the winders were hard and bleak and people needed a light in the dark to remember that the long winters would end. They celebrated the turn of the tide, the time of year when the night is the longest and the next day the days start getting longer until the snow melts and the world warms up again. Solstice was about the light, about fresh hope. About bringing a tree into your home so that you could see the evergreens or pines as a sign that life would return. All of the aspects of christmas can be traced back to its pagan roots. When the Christians came they needed ways to convert the heathens so they adopted some of their customs and told them they had new roots they based the stories on their god and did their best to destroy the true roots of the holidays. Shocking huh? Not really they did that with all the major pagan holidays Easterwhy do you think you paint eggs and bunnies are so important? Well because they both symbolize new birth.
